Google is linking YouTube accounts with, well, Google accounts

A new post on the official YouTube blog outlines plans for connecting the two monster services. Google, as you know, purchased YouTube some time ago and has been integrating the two since.

It’s not that big a deal, though. Here is something straight from the blog posting.

We’re gradually asking all remaining pre-May 2009 users still using the older YouTube account system to connect a Google Account to their YouTube username.

The good news is that nothing will really change for users of either service. Many of us already have a linked account. People who don’t, won’t be required to use Gmail or anything like that.

It’s apparently just an easier and more secure way for the company to manage users. Read the blog post here.

But I wanted to take this opportunity to remind people of all the goodness that Google provides and how journalists can benefit from all of it.

Aside from Gmail, which is pretty good, you have Wave; Voice; Calendar; YouTube; Reader and a host of other apps to choose from.

Wave allows for collaborative messaging threads that are perfect for projects. I use it as a way to store notes and code I need across several computers.

Voice replaces your cell phone’s voicemail and texts you a transcript of the message. It also gives you an audio clip that can be shared. Both of those features are awesome, by the way.

It’s a journalistic playground. That’s especially true for Android phone users. Logging into your Gmail account automatically imports your contacts and calendar. And the Google services all run extremely smooth on the Droid phones.

Can’t always say that for my iPhone 4.

So there is it. Google is continuing its efforts to grandfather in YouTube users and journalists should all take part in the free lovin from Google services.
