Column: What’s your dream job?
Somebody at worked joked today about creating a mobile editor position. I assume that means that person would focus on producing mobile content while helping staff members use mobile technology.
I’m not saying we’re creating that position, mind you. Just saying it would be awesome.
So I started thinking about stuff, such as how much I would want that job and how it would basically consume me.
My life’s mission would suddenly be to make sure every reporter turns into a mobile broadcasting station using only a cell phone.
That is what I call a dream job.
The truth, though, is that it’s not my first dream job.
What was my first? Simple. It was just to have a job. Then I started covering crime and realized I wanted to be a crime reporter for a major paper that had tons of crime to cover.
I was always on call and always had a mobile police scanner with me. It was pretty normal for me to leave a dinner or event to go cover a fatal accident or an officer-involved shooting. Dream job.
Then I took a job covering the US/Mexico border. Instant awesomeness there. I tore through both sides of the border in search of stories. I interviewed officers, mayors, governors, Border Patrol agents, illegal immigrants and activists.
I’m also proud to say that I did it in a way that upset the activists on both sides, at the same time.
It was and still is the most fun I’ve ever had on the job. Second dream job.
That job didn’t really pay much, though. So I took a reporting job in Phoenix. Covering education, city hall and eventually the construction of a stadium wasn’t really a dream job. It WAS fun as hell at times.
In the past four years, I’ve had a couple editing jobs. My favorite was the night gig. Very fun and very fast-paced. Not a dream job, but it did alright for me. I got really close to landing a dream editing job, but it wasn’t meant to be.
There’s no telling where I’ll end up next.
I’ll do other jobs along the way. I’ll still be a journalists. I’ll still love the game. I will find my next dream job.
Can’t freakin wait.

I'm me. You are you. It's a pretty cool deal.
